Do you want your cake, Ginger?: Media Matters

While the use of profanity in the video filmed by  on May 26, 2018 isn’t good business communication, the purpose of the video is very relatable. Clients can be tricky. You have to convince them to take what you are offering seriously, but at the same time, they have their own interests, which might make getting the client to follow difficult.

For me the message of this video had less to do with clients or language, but with the media through which they were communicating. Texting and email are very difficult forms of communication. Writing a text or email is easy, but interpreting what is being said is not. Communication is never one sided or without emotion. When I say emotion, I do not mean expressiveness, but rather a human reaction.

This video does an amazing job capturing the humanity within general text messaging. Simple words back and forth are open to all kinds of interpretations or confusions.

Text: Kim!!! {Seesaw emoticon}…Always {Seesaw emoticon} but I’m home for the night?

Yep, I completely understand what is being said here. Don’t you? Seesaw emoticon means…ummm… play? children? cake..?

Kim: Would you like me to drop if off to you?

Text: I’m in the country Kim.

Yep. Totally understandable.

Remember, when you communicate someone else is on the other side and they are not in your head. You HAVE to give them context and information in order to process what is being said.

Moral to the story: We may have a large number of ways to communicate with others, but its not going to be effective or understood if we forget the person on the other side.
